What makes us different?

Our wine cellars are truly custom. Rollin Fox, Designer and President of Sleeping Grape Wine Cellars, works directly with you to build a wine cellar masterpiece that meets both your needs and the needs of the wine. Each cellar is built from scratch with each and every component constructed specifically for your wine cellar.

Where others use pre-assembled modules from overseas, we custom build your wine cellar from scratch to fit precisely into your home.

Where others use MDF, particle board, medite, melamine or products with added formaldehyde, we use sustainably harvested solid hardwood wine racking and authentic hardwood ply panel with hand applied solid hardwood nosing.

Where others mass produce hundreds of cellars that all look alike, our designer Rollin Fox creates a unique design for every cellar we build.

Highly trained, skilled artisans at our shop in Vancouver, BC build all of our wine cellars by hand. Sleeping Grape Wine Cellars uses traditional methods and techniques to create genuine hardwood wine cellars especially designed for your wine collection. Our wine cellars are gorgeous and one-of-a-kind, functional and yet works of art.

Our shop and equipment have been customized and modified expressly to attain the superb end result our customers are searching for. This enables us to produce distinctive hardwood wine cellars that bear the mark of a master craftsman.

The materials our wine cellars are crafted from

We do not use MDF, particleboard, melamine or any products of this nature – there is no added formaldehyde in any of our wood products. Sleeping Grape Wine Cellars specializes in sustainably harvested B.C. hardwoods including Maple, Cherry, Alder, Birch and Beech. We also have access to exotic woods like Anegre, Black Walnut and Brazilian Cherry. The majority of our wood arrives rough-cut and kiln dried from a local mill. We take the wood from this form right through to completion of your wine cellar. Solid hardwoods are used in the construction of the wine racking and doors. Components that require more stability, such as our cabinets and countertops, are made from domestic core, furniture grade plywood, with hardwood veneers and finished with solid hardwood nosings.

Our stains are hand rubbed into the wood in order to intensify its beauty and character. Although this method is more labour intensive than spraying stains on, it covers more effectively yet does not obscure the attributes of the wood, resulting in a far more impressive end result. To seal and protect the wood, a low VOC, water based, clear lacquer finish is applied.

Sales and Service

Clients repeatedly comment on our prompt, professional service and how knowledgeable we are on wine cellar construction. Sleeping Grape Wine Cellars aims to eliminate your uncertainties and we do this by answering all of your questions and providing the direction that will lead you to the wine cellar of your dreams.

Green initiatives

We use sustainably harvested local hardwoods and low VOC finishes in an effort to reduce our impact on the environment. Our cutting is strategized to minimize the amount of waste material and, wherever possible, these materials are streamed for reuse. Our plywood scraps are redirected to an Okanagan winery to support their initiative to build habitat boxes for wild bluebirds. Lower Mainland ranchers use our wood shavings for bedding their livestock and our delivery vehicles are fueled by bio-diesel. We continue to look for new ways to improve our processes in an effort to become greener still.
